Safer Eco Sunscreen Options

sunscreen

  1. Nature’s Gate Kids Mineral Sunscreen, SPF 20
  2. Juice Beauty Sport Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 30
  3. Badger Sunscreen Cream, Unscented, SPF 30
  4. The Honest Company Honest Sunscreen Stick, SPF 30
  5. California Baby Super Sensitive Sunscreen Stick, SPF 30+
  6. Seventh Generation Baby Sunscreen, SPF 30
  7. Yes to Cucumbers Natural Sunscreen Stick, SPF 30
  8. Earth’s Best Mineral Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 30
  9. TruKid Daily Sunscreen Face & Body Stick, SPF 30
  10. COOLA Suncare Body Plant UV Sunscreen Moisturizer, Unscented, SPF 30

To see all the safest sunscreens, check out either Best Beach & Sport Sunscreens or Best Moisturizers with SPF.

  • High-SPF (SPF values of greater than 50+) products are misleading to the public and may result in people not applying sunscreen often enough.
  • Retinyl palmitate, a form of vitamin A, may speed up the development of skin tumors and lesions, plus because vitamin A is found in so many products, toxicity due to excessive exposure may result. Vitamin A safety is a huge debate and not everyone agrees that vitamin A is a hazard.
  • Sunscreen is just one way to protect yourself from the sun.

Protect your eyes!

sunglassesDSC_1414

To best protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV and HEV rays, always wear good quality sunglasses when you are outdoors.

Look for sunglasses that block 100 percent of UV rays and that also absorb most HEV rays. Youroptician can help you choose the best sunglass lenses for your needs.

To protect as much of the delicate skin around your eyes as possible, try at least one pair of sunglasses with large lenses or a close-fitting wraparound style.

And of course who could forget the timeless option , the parasol!

Tips Tuesday – Patience

cartoon

Ever just want to jump ahead to the good part of a book, or movie?  Or just want to get past the work of setting up the party and just get down to getting down!  Sometimes we want to just find someone else to do the tough stuff so we can enjoy the fun.  BUT we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the satisfaction of the job well done.  Nor would we be the wiser for the all the lessons we might have learned in the challenges we might face while doing the work.  This applies to EVERY area of our lives. We can’t skip ahead no matter how bad we want to.  When I was a kid I wanted to grow up so fast, not sure why, maybe it was the freedom I thought adults had, or the money LOL.  But either way I wanted it now, and to go faster.  Now I seem to have trouble slowing things down!  I wish I had a pause button or rewind to appreciate the times I rushed through with little or no appreciation that now seems the happiest moments of my life.  I have since rectified this habit-o-mine

live in the moment 2

We can learn from this now, right now in the now.  Slow down.  What, if anything, do you want, need, aspire to in this moment.  Not the next.  this will allow you to impregnate (sorry for the squrimish image) each moment with purpose and actually slow things down to enjoy it more.  Showing gratitude for the now actually makes each moment better, less like work, so that we are not always seeking happiness and satisfaction in the next moment.  It also dissolves anxiety as it is induced by an inexhaustible dissatisfaction with our current situations.  It gives you time to review what you really want to change, how to improve and what you need to do to accomplish it.  Jumping ahead may get you to the next thing faster, but it’s not as full, not as precious and only gets you to the finish line faster, and when we recognize the finish line is our physical end, is that what you really want?  Remember, it’s in the journey not the destination!  Learn to embrace that and you will embrace the secret to happiness!

Tips Tuesday – Rough Road Ahead!

A Road Closed sign on highway 41/64/72 at the Lee Highway bridge over the Tennessee River.

Yikes Construction is everywhere!  Pretty soon I will have to cut hair through Astral Travel!  All the roads to and from HHDS and my home will soon be closed due to construction.  Not just that but EVERYONE I have been talking to has been mentioning they have been experiencing some pretty tough inner construction too!  It looks like ‘As Within So Without’ does really apply here!

It seems like these challenging times are the most daunting the toughest to navigate and the hardest to bare.  There is no better time then these to stop and look at our self care.  Have we been optimally nurturing ourselves?  If so the impact of outer influences will be felt, but in less of an emotionally tumultuous manner then if we have been slacking in this area.  In these times ‘Doing’ less is more, or at least thats what it looks like from the outside.  If someone were to observe me during these challenging times they might think I was crazy!  All this chaos and I’m too calm, seemingly oblivious to the anarchy outside, BUT!  In reality I am doing something HUGE!  If we remember at our thoughts affect our health, our frequency then we know that what our vibration is attracts the like to us.  So if I want calm peaceful bliss, I must create it inside.  This has been a tough one for me.  I was raised a ‘Do-er’ God helps those who help themselves I was told.  But over the years I realized I messed it up worst for th most part and it was incredibly stressful for me the whole time.  Ever been around someone who was totally calm in a tragedy?  They become an anchor for those terrified souls around them.  They have a calming affect on the whole thing helping others to focus and regroup.  You can be that for yourself, not in an avoidance way though this is not healthy or helpful.  During crazy times being the observer, staying focused and calm allows you to think more clearly and find a solution more effectively.  Not only that but it won’t affect the health of your mind body and spirit as much because you won’t slide into fight or flight.

one way

As we all know troubling times come to us to give us an opportunity to learn and grow.  Some would say ‘If that’s the case I have credentials out the whazoo!’  But truly, if we remember that through every challenge and stay calm, we can extract the lesson, integrate it and move on faster, minimizing casualties including your own!  Remember, ‘What’s The Rush?’

The Inevitable Navigation System: 'You have arrived at your destination.'

So in the mean time check on line to see what roads to avoid, leave a bit earlier and know that sometimes this won’t help. So if you find yourself winding through, navigating one way streets and closed road signs, take a deep breath enjoy your coffee, and enjoy the scenic route!

Tips Tuesday – The Engine Light!

BROKECAR

So my car was hesitating in higher rev at second gear.  I wasn’t sure what was going on not being terribly ‘Car Saavy’, so I asked my husband to check it out.  After filling the tank with premium gas and some fuel conditioner it seemed to be running more smoothly. (Hoping to purchase a Hybrid VERY SOON!).  This didn’t last long, after a longer road trip the problem had become worst.  This time the hubby got serious about the investigation!  Under the hood uncovered the real problem!  A gaping hole in an air vent was the culprit to our car’s hiccup predicament.  after repairing the hole, cleaning the interior and exterior the car is running as smooth as ever!

Now most of you used to these bloggs are probably trying to connect the dots to this theme, and the theme my typical bloggs take.  So many people run their bodies like a machine, no oils changes, no filling the gas tanks, no car washes or repairs.  Just running till ‘something’, usually illness, forces them to look at their health and what efforts their self care has had on their health if they have shown any self care towards themselves at all.  When we pay more attention you our bodies, the whispers can be enough to remind us we need to do more to preserve our health and not wait till the shout to attempt to put out fires.  Any high performance vehicle needs maintenance, to stay in peak performance and avoid break downs.  What makes us think we can go at top speed and not break down, not crash and burn?  Want to reach peak performance?  Want to run on most efficient gas mileage?  You need to get your tires rotated, get an oil change now and again, maybe take the scenic route once and a while.  Ok so this might be an article to share with your hubby to motivate him to introduce more self care too, but I have yet another connection to make.

engine 1engine 2

Everything is connected.  If one thing is dysfunctional in the engine of life whether it be mentally physically or emotionally, you WILL feel it in other areas.  It is essential to recognize that you can not overly any issue you are experiencing, it is the ‘Engine Light’ that your life uses to draw attention to something only you can fix.  On a grander scale all this week HHDS is participating in Earth Week celebrations.  We are doing this because whether it’s convenient or not, easy or not, comfortable or not, our planet is flashing the engine light, and it has been for a while.  When will you take note, and do what YOU can to heal the problem.  Feel free to join us in cleaning up our communities this week, everyday we are going out collecting garbage, making an effort to prevent the items tossed around on garbage day over the winter from entering our water systems and killing our wild life, in an effort to ease the glow of the Engine light.  As we are all connected, the responsibility lies in each of our hands to do our part, nothing else matters no other issues as large or prominent if we don’t have fresh air to breath clean water to drink and majestic creatures to share our planet with.

Tips Tuesday – World Water Day

water-infographic-1

Many people who are aware of HHDS being the first Eco Friendly salon, spa and energy space.  Whenever we offer a tour to our new clients we explain the following:

Welcome to HHDS! Kitchener Waterloo’s First Eco Friendly Salon Spa and Energy space

We offer full hair , skin and energy services in a safer atmosphere for you, our staff and the planet.  The following products and services will explain how.

We use Eufora hair care products which uses 70-80% certified organic Aloe gel, instead of water, as their product base. So, this really allows the products to heal and renew the cells on your scalp and hair.  Aloe also is a natural preserving agent. The products are also infused with botanical ingredients and pure essential oils, and contain no harmful chemicals.  The company who manufacturers it boasts a zero foot print impact on the planet!

HHDS is our own label for shampoos and conditioners. We’re proud to say it is Canadian made and uses certified organic and fairtrade ingredients, and being that they are in glass jars, infinitely refillable for only $18.  We offer an unscented shampoo and conditioner in this line.  Not only are our products organically derived but they boast no parabens, sulfates, artificial colours or dyes.

We are excited to launch Worlsd Hair Care line which contain natural organic ingredients, are left as unaltered as possible, virtually no scent AND it’s Canadian!

Our polish line, Zoya, is the longest wearing natural polish there is. It’s a 4-free , toluene, formaldehyde, DBP and Camphor free vegan formula and does not contain the harsh chemicals typically found in nail polishes.  Stainless Steel Bowls with no jets in the pedi area provide Bacteria free worry free indulgence.

Most recently added is Holistic Energy healing services and certification programs, like Crystal Grid Therapy, Reiki and Shambala,  Reflexology, Electromagnetic Therapy, Body Talk, Holistic Life Caching and Energy Psychology.

Our Mineral Make Up line is proudly Canadian!. We love FitGlow because it’s a mineral make-up, so there are no biological ingredients in the formula, which means there’s also no need for preservatives. It’s also a natural UV protector due to the content of Zinc.

We use the RVB Holistic products on the face and body. Similar to our other product lines, RVB does not contain harmful chemicals-they have found a way to bind the water molecules to the other ingredients- because the free water molecule in a product are what causes bacteria. So by doing this they are able to use less preservatives, and the ones they do use are fruit & vegetable derived. And their ingredients are Fair Trade certified organic.

Here, you can see our colour line, by Anew. Anew is great because you can colour your hair without being afraid of damaging it. It uses natural pigments and antioxidants to prevent damage, it’s ammonia free, and it contains Quartz powder, which actually encourages a really healthy shine.  All of this means healthier safer hair services with no fumes and sensitivity on the scalp!

We like being able to multi-use our zones, to reduce our footprint as much as possible.  We are truly Loyal to our environment and our guests not a brand so if we find something safer to use in our space we switch out after we test it for effectiveness.  We use our refillable glass jars in the back as well have re purposed furniture and items from the REstore to reduce our footprint too!  notice our compost and burlap bag hair receptacles there- Because we’re a part of the ‘Green Circle Salons’- instead of dumping our waste in the garbage, they pick up our leftover foils and hair clippings, and deliver them to manufacturers of eye glass frames, furniture, light fixtures and ceiling fans. We run on Bullfrog energy as well, which is all wind and solar derived energy.  We also use Norwex and Enjyo cleaning products in our space.

We really like to support the community- so every year we choose a school to donate a tree to. Every April during Earth week we participate in a Community garbage clean-up.  So we hope you’re just as excited as we are about supporting the community and the environment and using the best natural products out there!

We make this general knowledge not just to prove our commitment but to encourage others to do everything they can to become more mindful of their impact on the environment too.

The following tips were taken from the Nature Conservatory site, Check it out here and learn  how you can support them and ensure safer water for all! http://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/habitats/riverslakes/help/

  1. Run washing machines & dishwashers only when they’re full. Large loads = less water used. And save energy by turning off the auto-dry setting and letting your dishes dry naturally.
  2. Keeping a timer in your bathroom will help you take a shorter shower. And please turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth. All that perfectly clean tap water is just going down the drain.
  3. Turn off lights and unplug chargers. Water is used in all forms of energy generation. It can take over 4 gallons of water to keep a 60-watt light bulb lit for 12 hours.
  4. Use biodegradable cleaning products. The water that goes down your drains will eventually flow into streams and bays.
  5. Skip meat for one meal a week. It can take about 600 gallons of water to produce a hamburger. (Think of all the grain that’s grown to feed the cattle.)

5 Simple Things You Can Do Online

  1. Use social media to spread the word about the need to save water and save our water sources. Challenge your friends to match the actions you take.
  2. Find out where your water comes from and urge others to do the same. Knowledge is power.
  3. Use social media to ask your favorite brands what they’re doing to reduce their water use and their impacts on water sources.
  4. Donate to support a community project that helps protect water for people and nature.
  5. Take our water pop quiz! Don’t worry; it’s more fun than the SATs. Knowing more about your water source and consumption habits will make you a stronger steward for water conservation.

5 Simple Things You Can Do Outside

  1. Plant a tree in your yard or a friend’s yard. Trees help keep soil in place – rather than flowing into our streams and lakes – and help slow water down, reducing flooding and enabling more rainwater to trickle down into groundwater supplies.
  2. Take these steps to reduce your impact when it comes to your own yard and lawn:
    • Water your lawn or garden in the morning or the evening when the water will evaporate less rapidly. Adjust sprinklers to avoid the pointless watering of sidewalks or paved areas.
    • Sweep patios and sidewalks rather than hosing them, which wastes water and carries contaminants into freshwater systems.
    • Limit pesticide use. Pesticides are the only substances we intentionally introduce into our environment to kill living things, and besides being potentially dangerous to people, pets and wildlife, they’ll eventually be carried into our freshwater supply by runoff.
  3. Make sure your hiking gear is free of plant matter when you head out into nature. Seeds of invasive plant species can hitch a ride on boots. Invasive species can cause many water problems, including absorbing more water than native species and sending erosion and bacteria into rivers and lakes.
  4. Volunteer for a stream-clean up or wetland restoration event.
  5. Take someone on a hike near a river or lake – or better yet, get in or on the water – swimming, kayaking, canoeing, etc. People protect things they care about.

David Suzuki

Everyone knows we are K-W’s First Eco Friendly Salon, Spa and Energy Space.  But do they understand why?  Every knows I have started a new company called ‘The Institute For Harmonious Living’ , but do they know why?

I grew up watching The Nature of Things.  I loved it, it was one of my favorite shows, it was the 80’s version of Kratts Creatures!  As I have grown up with David I have witnessed a transformation in him.  He started out curious, became aware and concerned about our impact on the planet and then started doing something about it.  This brings me back to the ‘whys’ I listed earlier.  I started out curious, ended up waking up from our cultural pablum we are served and then had to do something about it.  Not feeling good at work myself made me realize there had to be something wrong with products I was using.  It had to be making me feel that way, so then what was it doing to my clients, my water, my planet?  As I become more educated It became more and more clear someone had to do something?!  There were other people like me who simply ‘Trusted’ that someone, somewhere was regulating the things we used, bought, ate, slathered on our skin.  Right?  So by becoming more aware, more educated I became empowered, and I followed where it led me.  To create HHDS.  But it didn’t stop there, I realized as I’m sure David Suzuki did when his daughter complained as a child that ‘they might as well give up cause the world was going to end anyway’, that it wasn’t enough to just make noise to draw attention to a concerning cause.  You have to educate others, motivate others through positive action and inspiring example.  And so The Institute OF Harmonious Living was born.  What’s the connection?  As I attempted to ‘make noise’ with the salon I recognized that people were too buys, too stressed, too numbed out to do anything more.  They figured well I’m recycling, isn’t that enough?  Why cant the big corporations do more?  (I do agree with that last one!) But in reality it takes each one of us to do more.  But if you are already in overwhelm, how can you muster the energy to take action?  Through Coaching, Public Speaking, and training others, I can assist each participant in better connecting to their own needs, and in turn connecting to the needs of others and in turn the planet.  Through Self Care awareness and a stronger understanding of how our minds work to create our reality, we can literally ‘Re’ Program ourselves to be healthier, happier and in turn more conscious of our impact on others and Mother Earth.

It came to my attention that David Suzuki is celebrating his 80th Birthday and what better way then to commit to doing more to make our planet healthier.  The following links will take to stories of David’s journey and to an amazing program to protect and preserve the planet and ALL of it’s inhabitants!  ENJOY!

Tips Tuesday – Now What?!

to do list

I don’t know about you but I have a list a mile long of ‘Things I gotta Do’!  There never seems enough hours in the day.  The day starts with a list, which grows instead of shrinks, then ends with frustration and defeat, when life gets in the way and the items on the list needs to be ‘bumped’.  Or more likely the list is too long to begin with.  Probably crowded with items that are not even priorities for us, but perhaps have been placed there by others.  What is written between the lines of the to do items is judgment, expectation, disappointment.  Who is the projector of these negative feelings?  Is it you?  Your mom?  Your fourth grade teacher?  Your husband?  Your Kids?  Your Boss?  You get the picture.  Find out how to identify who and how The Writing On Your Wall got there!  Feb 23rd 6-9 Call for a seat 519-404-6627

We tend to lose site of why we are here.  We decide to agree with everyone outside of us, motivated with greed, fame, esteem, attention, popularity, appreciation and respect from others.  As our lives fly by while we rush to reach unlimited heights of everything we are told is important, we never stop to question it.  Until we hit ‘Mid-Life Crisis’ or perhaps serious illness forces us to stop or at the very least slow down, which for many feeling a lot like an all out neck breaking STOP!  For a few that are focused more on observing their lives and dissecting their actions by questioning the ingredients of what is in our collective cultural ‘KoolAid’, their experience is more peaceful, subtle and accepting of selves and others.  Either way the opportunity to redirect through the experience is met with our Free Will.  Will we Decide to see this momentary pause as the chance to fully participate in life or will we choose to hop back on the treadmill until we are ejected off the end of the ride!

The purpose of this post is to give you permission to STOP.  Question the KoolAid, and ask yourself truly, do you want a second serving, or will you pass on that last call and choose a healthier option. Maybe just Maybe, it’s ok to do this whole ‘Life‘ thing a different way!  This doesn’t happen over night.  Start with falling back in love with life experiences.  Observe EVERYTHING!  The detail on the coat of the lady standing in front of you in the elevator.  Listen to the rain till it resembles music.  Inhale deeply as soon as you step outside to smell the air, the dirt, the stone, the flowers! Sit on the couch in silence with your eyes closed, paying acute attention to what you feel.  Is there any tension in your body?  Can you focus on that part of your body and breath into that area deeply to release all the tension, focusing on each and every area in sequence.

You might be thinking ok, anyone watching me is going to think I’m crazy!  Well, trust me, you may think everyone is watching you but that is just the KoolAid Hang Over!  No offense, but everyone else is too busy thinking about how everyone else is looking at them, too busy to watch your every move.  So this freedom provides you with ample opportunity to investigate your new found child like view of the world!  And when you least expect it you’ll find it!  YOUR LIFE!

Your Welcome!
